Getting Around

Sloppy Joe

Sloppy Joes are great fun to eat food for family dinner time. You probably wouldn't serve this for the ladies formal tea (at least not twice) but for great hearty food that is easy to prepare, it's tough to beat Sloppy Joes. This recipe is better than ManWich and less expensive. Yet another case of learning to cook being both better and cheaper than the "commercial" alternative.

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 green pepper, diced
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 stalk celery, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 3/4 C ketchup
  • 3/4 C water
  • 1 tsp prepared mustard
  • 1 Tbl Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and Pepper to taste

In a frying pan, brown the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it up into small bits. Add the pepper, onion and celery and cook until the onion begins to be clear, about 3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute, stirring all together. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir.

The mixture will be watery at this point. The reason I add the water when most other recipes don't is that it makes the sauce and flavors meld better. Bring the mixture back to a simmer and then let it simmer until the mixture is saucy, not wet. Serve on hamburger buns. Pick up and try to eat without it all dropping on the plate. That's why they're called Sloppy Joes.
